Empowering Non-Profit Boards - Workshop Series

We’re excited to introduce a new learning opportunity for local non-profit leaders this spring.

The Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with SASCU, is hosting a five-part workshop series designed to support the leaders who support our community.

These practical sessions are open to board members, executive directors, staff, and anyone involved in non-profit leadership who would like to strengthen their knowledge of governance, financial oversight, and long-term sustainability.

Serving on a non-profit board comes with important legal and ethical responsibilities. This session will provide a clear overview of directors’ duties, including fiduciary responsibility, duty of care, and duty of loyalty. Participants will learn about potential liabilities, risk management, and best practices to ensure compliance while supporting the organization effectively. Whether you’re new to a board or looking for a refresher, this session will help you feel confident in your role and decision-making. This session is facilitated by Ryan Scorgie of Brooke Downs Vennard and Jenn Sonmor of Acuity Advisors.

Financial literacy is a critical part of good governance. In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to read and interpret key financial documents, including balance sheets and income statements. We’ll walk through real-world examples and highlight what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to spot potential concerns. By the end, you’ll feel more confident participating in financial discussions and contributing to informed, responsible decision-making at the board table.  This session is facilitated by Jenn Sonmor of Acuity Advisors.

Led by Erin Stagg of SASCU and Monica Sigurdson of the Shuswap Community Foundation, this session will walk through the fundamentals of effective grant writing. Learn how to clearly communicate your impact, align your application with funder priorities, and avoid common pitfalls. You’ll gain practical tips, insights from both the funding and community perspectives, and tools to strengthen your future applications.
